How Often Should Granite Countertops Be Sealed?

Granite countertops are a long-time favorite of families in the United States because they’re known for their supreme durability, hardness, and longevity. However, as naturally resilient as granite may be, it’s not without some maintenance needs. If you’re planning to install granite countertops in your kitchen or bathroom, one of the biggest questions you may have is: How will I care for my granite countertops? And how often will they need to be resealed?

Why Is Sealing Your Granite Countertop Important?

Granite is a naturally porous stone. In nature, this means granite is prone to absorbing water from rain or moisture from the air. In terms of granite countertops, though, this means that unsealed granite may be prone to soaking up spills and stains—ruining a slab and leaving discoloration that’s impossible to repair.

Sealing is how we prevent staining and keep granite countertops looking great over time. With proper maintenance and sealing practices, granite countertops can last for decades!

How Often Should You Seal Granite Countertops?

Unfortunately, there is no exact answer to this. Some homeowners prefer to have their counters resealed every 6-12 months. Others prefer to go longer between sealings, opting for a schedule closer to 1-3 years.

The frequency of sealing will depend on the porosity of your particular granite slab. One way to test whether your granite slab is ready to be resealed is to place a few drops of water onto your countertop. If the water penetrates the surface in 30 minutes or less, your counters need to be resealed.

One helpful thing to remember is that it’s not possible to overseal your countertop—so when in doubt, err on the side of caution and opt to reseal more frequently.
