How We Clean Our Natural Stone Countertops

On the list of frequently asked questions we hear from our clients, one of the most common is undoubtedly, “How can I take care of my new countertops?” Earth Art is an investment in your home—if you practice a few simple maintenance techniques, your countertops will look incredible for decades to come.

While every countertop material varies a bit and may require slightly different care practices, here are a few tips we use to care for almost any natural stone surface.

1. Always use trivets, cutting boards, coasters, and place mats.

Trivets protect your stone from the shock of quickly changing temperatures—placing something very hot or cold on your natural stone counter puts your countertop at risk of cracking. Likewise, cutting boards, coasters, and placemats protect your counter from scratches, nicks, spills, and water stains.

2. Clean up spills immediately.

This is especially important if your countertop is made from an especially porous stone, like marble. Regardless of what type of stone your countertop utilizes though, you should always mop up spills as quickly as possible; the longer a spill sits, the higher the risk that it will be absorbed by the stone and turn into a permanent stain.

3. Clean with a gentle, water-based solution.

If you want to keep things simple, warm water and dish soap will do just fine. We also offer a more specialized product called CLEAN & REVITALIZE that not only keeps your countertop clean without the use of chemicals, but also restores your stone’s natural finish and keeps your countertop looking newer for longer. You can learn more about CLEAN & REVITALIZE on our Care and Maintenance page.

4. Avoid abrasive or acidic cleaning products.

Natural stone is quite tough, but that doesn’t mean you should be careless about cleaners. Never scour your countertop or use acidic products—doing so risks scratching your coutertop’s finish and damaging the natural stone.

5. Plan for regular resealing.

Every type of stone is a little different, but in general, we recommend resealing your countertop every 2-3 years. Alternatively, we offer a 25-year worry-free sealant as an affordable upgrade.
