When to Adjust Cabinet Drawers

Even the best cabinetry will eventually need to be adjusted. Time and weather affect wood and can cause your cabinet drawers and doors to start sagging and sticking over time. Fortunately, learning to adjust your cabinet hardware is a simple skill that can help you prolong the life of your cabinetry.

It’s a good habit to periodically check your hardware to tighten screws and realign drawers, as hardware can loosen with use. A few tell-tale signs that it’s time to make adjustments include:

  • Loose drawers/doors

  • Doors won’t stay closed

  • Drawer glides are prone to sticking

  • Drawers or doors are visibly uneven, asymmetrical, or angled

  • Self-closing or soft-close mechanisms have stopped working

While adjustments may be necessary any time of the year, you’re most likely to need them during seasonal shifts. If your home experiences a change in temperature or humidity, an adjustment is likely in order. Likewise, adjustments are commonly needed in the period shortly after installation as your cabinets settle into their new environment.

While making small repairs can seem daunting, taking the time to adjust your hardware when necessary will help ensure that your cabinetry looks beautiful and functions perfectly for decades.
