5 Questions You MUST Ask Before Choosing Kitchen Countertops
November 1, 2019
Countertops in modern day kitchens are required to straddle the line between being workhorses and looking great. Shopping for the perfect countertop for your kitchen might seem daunting or overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be!
Before you make any decisions, we recommend asking yourself these five kitchen countertop questions:
1. What specifications do you need for your kitchen?
Do you have a general idea of how long or wide you’d like for your countertops to be? Do you know your kitchen features slightly abnormal dimensions? Are you dead set on having a huge island for your baking endeavors? Answering these questions is a great place to start—the size and shape of your countertops will influence cost, and your functionality requirements will influence which countertop material makes sense in your home.
2. What’s your budget?
Speaking of budgets, have you spent much time contemplating yours? Thinking about spending money isn’t the most fun pass time, but it’s important to start your renovation project with a clear idea of how much money you’re willing to spend. Certain materials and specializations obviously come with a higher price tag—but don’t worry, we’re here to help you choose countertops you’ll love on virtually any budget.
3. What materials catch your eye?
Are you naturally drawn to certain materials? A lot of people love the clean, bright look of marble, the earthy texture of granite, or the resilience and flexibility of quartzite. Doing some research and determining which materials speak to you is a great way to start narrowing down your countertop material options.
4. How will your countertops be used?
It’s important to be honest with yourself here: Are you more likely to cut on your countertop than to reach for a cutting board? Do you need a super-smooth surface for rolling out pie crusts and pizzas? Or are your countertops more likely to be an aesthetic focal point—nice to look at, but not often utilized as more than a resting place? Getting clear on your family’s lifestyle will help you select countertops that make your everyday life a little easier.
5. How much maintenance are you willing to take on?
Similar to our fourth question, this is a great opportunity to be honest with yourself. You might love the look of marble, but how will you react when your toddler spills red koolaid on your new counter? Are you willing to stay on top of spills and stains, or do you need a countertop that can withstand a little tough love every now and again? Choosing countertops that are durable enough to fit your lifestyle is the first step in making sure your new countertops last for decades to come.
